Google Maps API

Surely there's a web service out there that will return lat/long for any given address (i'm sure google provides this service too). There are many others...

I like the Google maps and can see using this for stuff here at work. but they need to seriously work on their directions engine. I had to go from Cherry Hill to Flemington on Sunday and they had me going out the PA turnpike to 611 to 202 with an estimaged 2 hours of driving time. The others had 95-31-202 which is the way I went with a drive time under 1 hour. Love the maps/satelite/interactivity. but directions are bad.

address -> lat/long conversion. a.k.a "geocoding". is available free as a web service at http://geocoder.us/. You could also screen-scrape google to accomplish the same thing. but they don't (yet?) provide it as a service.
